„The Dark and the Light“, NorthSouth Books , New York – die englische Ausgabe meines Bilderbuches „Das Dunkle und das Helle“, illustriert von Julie Völk – wurde im Journal ‚WOW Review‘ des ‚Center for Global Literacies and Literatures‘ (University of Arizona) bereits 2020 besprochen.
Die Rezension habe ich erst neulich entdeckt. Äußerst spannend, wie das Buch in den USA verstanden wird.

As the two friends adjust to the other’s land, their coats adjust. Bright spots of light appear on Shaggy’s dark coat as he becomes more comfortable in the new sun-drenched land. The same happens to Sparkle as she learns to live in the dark. The friends acknowledge that borderland living can have a positive outcome as “the darkness can never leave the coat completely. But a spotted coat is very beautiful.” Their friendship in the borderland leads them to agree that there is “nothing better in the whole world than to have a friend who [understands] the need for a parasol and a flashlight.” The story acts as a metaphor for the changes that occur as one adjusts to new spaces.“

EIN ZEICHEN DER FREUNDSCHAFT

Die Darmstädter Autorin Kerstin Hau spendete 20 Exemplare ihres Buches „The Dark and the Light“ an die öffentliche Bibliothek der Partnerstadt San Antonio. Die Autorin möchte damit ein Zeichen setzen – für Verbindungen über Grenzen hinweg.

15 englische und 5 deutsche Fassungen des Kinderbuches „The Dark and the Light“ stehen jetzt in der San Antonio Public Library in Texas. Darmstadts Partnerstadt hat sich sehr über diese Spende gefreut und am 25.08.20 eine Webkonferenz einberufen, um diese Geste der Verbundenheit zu würdigen. Beteiligt an diesem digitalen Treffen waren die Autorin selbst, der Bibliotheksleiter sowie Vertreterinnen der jeweiligen Internationalen Abteilung der beiden Städte.

Das Amt für Interkulturelles und Internationales freut sich, dass die Bücher bald von den kleinen und großen Bürgerinnen und Bürgern San Antonios gelesen werden können. Die berührende Geschichte mit den wunderbar detaillierten Illustrationen von Julie Völk passt sehr gut in die Zeit. Erzählt wird in dem Buch von zwei Charakteren aus verschiedenen Welten – einer dunklen und einer hellen. Zwischen den beiden Figuren entwickelt sich eine Freundschaft, welche die Grenzen der jeweils eigenen Welt überbrückt. Ein aktueller Stoff, der vor allem eines soll: Verbindungen schaffen. Die vielen Veränderungen bezogen auf die aktuelle Situation waren für Hau der Grund, ihre Bücher in die Partnerstadt zu schicken:

“I feel that old alliances are being shattered. Corona makes people ill, makes them die, keeps many alone, lonely. I wanted to do something about this. I have always seen the USA as a strong, inspiring nation. It hurts me when I see from Germany, how the country is divided, people suffer. But what can I, as a small German citizen, do about it? Nothing. Nothing? My options are limited. What can I do to shake off the feeling of powerlessness? My book is about friendship and the border as a space of encounter, about overcoming it and making a new start. This is a book that I would like to give to the people in your city.”, so Hau.

Austausch ist Annäherung

Das Amt für Interkulturelles und Internationales möchte sich für die großzügige Spende, die wunderbare Geste der Freundschaft und die offenen Worte bei Frau Hau bedanken. Durch den persönlichen Kontakt einzelner Bürger*innen werden Städtepartnerschaften mit Leben gefüllt. So sieht das auch Hau:

“My deep conviction is that only a living contact and exchange brings us closer to people. As a citizen of Darmstadt, I am proud that Darmstadt maintains so many friendly relationships in the world. I loved that since my childhood. Maybe I will write a book about this one day? I always experience the Heinerfest in particular as a gathering of the world in our home town. And how can I participate in it as a Darmstadt citizen? With a gift, as a sign of friendship.”

Kerstin Hau wird nächstes Jahr weitere Kinderbücher veröffentlichen. Ihr Ziel ist dabei vor allem, die Welt der Kinder zu erweitern. Mit ihrem derzeitigen Werk hat sie das auf jeden Fall schon geschafft.

Dem Termin vorausgegangen war eine Bücherspende meinerseits. Im Sinne der städtepartnerschaftlichen Freundschaft habe ich ein paar Exemplare von „The Dark and the Light“ sowie von der deutschen Ausgabe „Das Dunkle und das Helle“ an die städtische Bibliothek San Antonio gesendet. Die Kinderzeitschrift ‚Papperlapapp‚ spendierte zudem einige Exemplare der Ausgaben 14 und 17 in Deutsch-Englisch, die ich gerne dem Paket beilegte. Vielen Dank an Dr. Karin Hirschberger!

Warum wollte ich die Bücher spenden?
Erstens, weil mich das Geschehen in der Welt sehr beschäftigt. Gefühlt werden alte Bündnisse zerschlagen. Es geht ein Riss durch die Gesellschaft. Ich wollte dem etwas entgegensetzen.
Aber was kann ich tun, um das Gefühl der Machtlosigkeit abzuschütteln?

Der zweite Grund ist meine tiefe Überzeugung, dass nur ein lebendiger Kontakt und Austausch uns Menschen näherbringt. Als Darmstädterin bin ich stolz darauf, dass Darmstadt so viele freundschaftliche Beziehungen zu Partnerstädten pflegt. Wie kann ich mich als Darmstädterin daran beteiligen?

Da dachte ich: „Mensch, Dein Buch handelt von der Grenze als Raum der Begegnung, von der Überwindung und vom Neuanfang. Das ist ein Buch, dass ich den Menschen in unserer US-amerikanischen Partnerstadt schenken möchte.“

Partnerstädte sind eine tolle Möglichkeit für direkte Bürgerbegegnungen über die Grenzen hinweg. Neugierde, Offenheit und Vertrauen fördern Verbundenheit und tragen zu freundschaftlichen Beziehungen bei. Was gibt es Wichtigeres zwischen Menschen?
So kann auf lokaler Ebene ein tragfähiges Netz entstehen, das hält und auch in turbulenten (politischen) Zeiten trägt. Beide Seiten profitieren von diesem Austausch. Ganz nach dem Motto: Was man liebt, das will man fördern und schützen.

Daher freue ich mich umso mehr über diese Rückmeldung aus den USA: „I was inspired by your story and your commitment to spread love and bring people together through your literary works – what a wonderful goal.“

Und über diese: „Once again, we would like to thank you from the bottom of our heart for your generosity and the wonderful donation of books. The mission of Sister city relationships is to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation — one individual, one community at a time. You exemplify how to be a citizen diplomat in every way.“

In diesem Sinne: Herzliche Grüße zu großartigen Menschen nach San Antonio und Darmstadt!
